Questão Responda
MACROPHAGE White blood cells called monocytes travel in the blood. Once they settle in organs they develop into macrophages. These initiate the immune response displaying antigens for recognition by lymphocytes
AGGLUTINOGEN Antigen carried on the external surface of the membrane of red blood cells
ANTIGEN A molecule that stimulates an immune response by lymphocytes
ANTIBODY A protein made by lymphocytes in response to the appropriate antigen
AGGLUTINOGEN The clumping of red blood cells
MYOGENIC The heartbeat is initiated from within the muscle itself and not due to nerve stimulation
SYSTOLE Stage in which the heart muscle contracts
DIASTOLE Stage in which the heart muscle relaxes
STROKE Damage to the brain caused by a blood clot carried in the blood getting stuck in an artery supplying blood to the brain
MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION When blood is prevented from passing through the coronary artery to the heart muscle it supplies
ARRHYTHMIA A deviation or disturbance of the normal heart rhythm
AFFINITY One molecule having a chemical attraction for another
PARTIAL PRESSURE (of oxygen) (pO2) Normal atmospheric pressure is 100 kPa. As oxygen makes up 21% of the atmosphere its maximum partial pressure is 21 kPa
BOHR EFFECT Relationship between the saturation of haemoglobin and the partial pressure of oxygen. The higher the partial pressure of carbon dioxide the more the curve shifts to the right
TISSUE FLUID Plasma minus plasma proteins
LYMPH A colourless fluid, derived from tissue fluid, found in the lymphatic system
LYMPHATIC SYSTEM A network of conduits called lymphatic vessels that carry lymph uni-directionally towards the heart
