Declareration of Independence The document that was essentally a break up letter with Brittain. It told them that we wanted our freed and was signed 1776.
Revolutionary War The revolutionary war was us againts the brittish. It took place in Massachusetts and the New England areas. We eventually won our independance in 1776.
Articles of Confederation They were our first constitution. They were like a dog with no teeth, not very threatening or scary.
Great Compromise The compromise where the New Jersey plan and the Virginia plan came together to creat the legislative branch. The New Jersey plan was for he smaller states, each state was given two elected senators. This became the Senate. The Virginia plan was for the bigger states, it was based off of population. It became the Congress.
The passing of the constitution The constitution was ratified in 1788. There was a big argument whether or not to add the bill of rights.
Indian Removal acts Andrew Jackson passed the acts. The trail of tears was the worst of all of it. The Indians walked for miles and miles to Oklahoma. Many people died and got hurt or injured.
Mexican-American War The wars under James K Polk's presidency. It was fought for the Texas territory, the Alamo was also fought for in these battles.
California Gold Rush The gold rush was in 1849. The nikcname give to the people who went for gold were called Forty-Niners. Other people got rich off of the gold rush and not because of the gold. They may have charged them for transportation or the gold was simply on their land.
Homestead Act The homestead act allowed people to get free land in the Kansas Oklahoms area, mostly OKlahoma. The term Boomer Sooner comes from this. A boomer is a cheater and would start SOONER than everyone else.
Industrial Revolution The period where we had a huge technological boom. We went from an agricultural economy to an industrial one. It lasted from the late seventeen hundreds to the mid eighteen hundreds.
Underground Railroad The underground railroad was a way for slaves to get to freedom. It was led by Harriet Tubman.
Seneca Falls Convention The Seneca Falls convention was the first womens suffrage meeting. The leaders of the movemnt was Susan B Anthony and Elizabeth Cadey Stanton.
Compromise of 1850 The compromise of 1850 stated that for every free state there must be a slave state. It added California as a free state and banned the slave trade in Wahington, D.C. As well as adding the fugitive slave act.
Kansas-Nebraska Act The Kansas-Nebraska act allowed Kansas and Nebraska to be decide if it is a slave state or not with popular sovereignty.
Dred Scott v. Sanford The Dred Scott decision was very contraversial. It ended up saying that even though Dred was in a free state that he was still a slave.
Fugitive Slave act The fugitive slave act required any runaway slave to be caught and brought back to the master. Anyone caught helping a slave would be punished.
Bleeding Kansas This was a very bloody period in Kansas history. It was a border war between the Border Ruffians and Jayhawkers. They were fighting over the polls for the state's view on slavery.
Thomas Jefferson Thomas Jefferson was a founding father. He helped write the declaration of independence
Andrew Jackson Andrew Jackson is one of the most hated presidents. He passed the Indian removal act which forced Indians out of their land and into Oklahoma. They traveled along the trail of tears which was a very depressing time.
Sacagawea Sacagawea was an Indian girl who helped with the Corps of Discovery mission. She help Louis and Clark navigate the Louisiana territory and find the northwest passage.
James K. Polk James K. Polk a.k.a. Mr. Manifest destiny got the most land for the USA. During his presidency we acquired the Oregon territory, and the southwest territory after winning the Mexican-American war.
Frederick Douglass Frederick Douglass was a slave. He eventually gained his freedom. He wrote an autobiography and became an abolitionist.
Harriet Beecher Stower Harriet wrote a book called Uncle Tom's Cabin. It was about the brutality of slavery. It opened northerners eyes to how bad a thing slavery was.
Robert E. Lee Robert E. Lee was a general for the confederate army. He was one of the highest ranking generals and Abe Lincoln asked him to lead the Union army. He politely declined.
Andrew Jonson Andrew Johnson is known as the veto president. He was a very bad president too. He was in office during most of reconstruction. He vetoed many bills but a lot more were overridden.
Susan B. Anthony Susan was a main leader in the women's suffrage movement.
Sitting Bull Sitting Bull was killed my Custer because he was accused of encouraging ghost dancing. He was a chief of the Sioux tribe at thee time.
George Custer George Custer was the one who shot Sitting Bull at wounded knee. He was killed in action when we decided to attack the numerous tribe.
Cornelius Vanderbilt Vanderbilt made his money off of railroads and shipping. He had bought most of thee railroads in the mid west. He also charged people to get to California for gold.
John Rockeffeller Rockefeller made his money off of monopolizing the oil industry. His business, standard oil, didn't have to rely on anyone. That way he didn't have to pay to make money.
Andrew Carnegie Andrew Carnegie made the largest steal plant in America. He used the Bessemer process to pump out steel quicker and more efficiently.
John Brown John Brown led many violent raids in Kansas to sway the poles. He led Harper's Ferry raid in an attempt to rally slaves to create a revolt.
Louisiana purchase Louisiana purchase was 828,000 square miles. It was acquired in 1803, it added most of the southeast and mid west states.
Missouri compromise The Missouri compromise created by Henry Clay, stated that anything above 36 degrees North, and 36 degrees latitude was a free state, except the border states.
Civil War The Civil War started in 1861 at the battle of Ft. Sumter. After four years of conflict, General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse.
Emancipation Proclamation The emancipation proclamation freed any slave in the south. It was a three minute speech written on the back of a letter. It allowed African-Americans to fight.
Civil War Draft Riots During the draft rich people would b their way out of the army. The lower class were fed up because they were the ones who had to fight.
Gettysburg Address The Gettysburg Address was given after the bloodiest battle of the war. It was saying that the troops hadn't died for no reason and that we nee to win this for them.
Reconstruction Reconstruction was a violent time in our history. The KKK was founded and terrorized blacks and anyone helping them. In this time period we tried to mend the lesions that were formed from the war.
Civil War Amendments The civil war amendments were the 14th, 15th, and 16th amendments. They freed slaves, gave them the right to vote, and finally gave them birth right citizenship.
Completion of Transcontinental Railroad The railroad connected the west coast and east coast. It started in the 1860s ad was finished 1869.
Indian Wars The Indian wars were a series of battles against the US government and the Indians. The Indians fought to keep their land.
Gilded Age This was our first economical boom.Our first billionaires were made. They used their skills and their ruthlessness.
Populist Party The populist party was against the rich business men, It was mostly farmers wanting to over the necessary taxes.
Plessy v Ferguson The Plessy v Ferguson case involved racial segregation. Homer would not sit in a black railway car, which is against the law. Plessy was declined by the court as it stood as the only racial case for around 50 years.
Jamestown Jamestown was the first town in America. Founded by Captain John Smith, he made his money off of tobacco.
Plymouth Plymouth was where the immigrants landed when they fled the harsh rule of the British.
Lexington and Concord This was the first battle of the American Revolution. We had ambushed a British march and defeated them.
Erie Canal The canal was from Albany to lake Erie. It opened up many trade opportunities.
The Alamo The Alamo was lost by the US. They out numbered us greatly and had a huge morale boost.
Harper's Ferry This was one of John Brown's raids. His intent to was to free the slaves and start a revolt. He was killed there and never sparked a revolt.
Fort Sumter Fort Sumter was the first battle of the civil war. The first shots were fired here and showed that the war would be very long.
Gettysburg The battle at Gettysburg was the bloodiest battle of the war. It gave the US a morale boost and allowed Lincoln to give the Gettysburg Address.
Appomattox Courthouse Here, General Robert E. Lee surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant. He saw the amount of army that Grant had a knew he didn't stand a chance.
Fords Theater Fords theater is where Abraham Lincoln was shot in the back of the head by John Wilkes Booth.Lincoln was shot April 14th 1865.
Promontory Point, Utah Promontory Point is where the central pacific and Omaha Nebraska railroads met together. It was a huge celebration since the transcontinental railway was complete.
Angel and Ellis Island Angel and Ellis island is where immigrants would dock to get tested for diseases. They would also get their names and get their citizenship.
Adding the bill of rights Adding the bill f rights was a difficult decision. Those who wanted it passed were Federalists and those who opposed it were Anti-Federalists.
Congress The congress is made up of two houses, The senate and house of representatives. The senate has 100 senators and the House has 435 representatives.
