Frederick Douglass | Douglass was a former salve but later became a leader of an abolitionist movement. He was the first African American to hold a high government rank. |
Harriet Beecher Stowe | Stowe was a female, white author and was best known for her novel, Uncle Toms Cabin. |
John Brown | John Brown was known for his Raid on Harper's Ferry in 1859. He was also an abolitionist. |
Robert E. Lee | Lee was the leading confederate general during the Civil war. He is known as a hero to the south. |

Articles of Confederation | The Articles of Confederation was the first written constitution for the United States but we re-did it and have what today is known as our, constitution. |
Great Comprimise | Also known as the Connecticut Compromise, they created the two-house legislature plan which gave a fair amount of votes for each state. Everyone was content with the decision. |
Passing of the constitution | It took 10 months for the first nine states to approve the Constitution. 13 states had to ratify the constitution. (the 13 colonies) May 29th, 1790 Rhode Island was the last state to approve of the Constitution. After all stated approved it was our Constitution. |
Adding to the Bill of Rights | The first 10 amendments to the Constitution make up the Bill of Rights.The Bill of Rights belong to the government power. The government (Senate & House) must approve. |
Louisiana Purchase | This was a land deal between America and France. We received $827,000 miles of land for just 15 million dollars. |

Mexican-American War | This war lasted from 1846-48. This was the first American battle fought on foreign soil. After this Mexico lost around 1/3 of its territory including California, Utah, Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico. |
California Gold Rush | Thousands of gold miners came to California because of this. The word spread around the world quickly that there was gold in California. |
Homestead Act | This Act provided settlers with 160 acres of land. the residents had to pay a small fee for this to happen though. |
Industrial Revolution | This was the transformation of the US. We started using machines, buildings, factories etc.. |
Underground Railroad | Harriet Tubman led this in the time of slavery. Slaves would follow this path after they escaped slavery/ it would lead them to the North. |
Seneca Falls Convention | This was the first Women's Rights Convention. |
Compromise of 1850 | During this compromise the Fugitive slave Act was amended and the slave trade in Washington DC was eliminated. |
Kansas Nebraska Act | this act was a bill that stated popular sovereignty allowed settlers to decide whether slavery would be allowed in their state. |
Dred Scott vs. Sanford | Dred Scott moved to Illinois( a free state) with his slave owner, it was debatable whether he should be free or remain a slave. Dred Scott remained a slave. |
Fugitive Slave Act | This allowed people to capture and return slaves in any part of the US. |
Bleeding Kansas | This was a violent political debate in the United States involving "anti-slavery Free-Staters" and pro-slavery people. It took place in the Kansas Territory and Missouri (1854-1861) |
Civil war | This war was fought between the Southern part of America and the Northern part of America because of differentials in mostly slavery. The Union won. (1861-65) |

Civil War Draft Riots | violent riots in New York City that were caused by working-class people unhappy with new laws passed by Congress that drafted men to fight in the Civil War. |

Reconstruction | The time after the Civil war in which we tried to bring the south back to the union and remake our country a better place. |
The Civil war amendments | Known as the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments. 13- Abolition of slavery 14- Gave blacks citizenship 15- let black males vote |
The completion of the Transcontinental Railroad | At Promontory, Utah, California they completed the Railroad. The railroad was completed in 1869 and a great accomplishment to the United States. |
Indian wars | These were conflicts between the Native Americans and the Americans about land, culture etc.. that eventually lead to battles. |
Gilded Age | The 19th century, the time of Robber-Barons, politics, industrial corporations, etc... |
Populist Party | A third-party movement that began in the 1890s and consisted of mostly farmers. The Populists were particularly known for supporting the unlimited coinage of silver. |
Plessy Vs. Ferguson | Plessy a light colored black man sat in the white section for the train. In LA he could not do this and it was against the law. he went all the way to supreme court because of this. |
Plymouth | Colonist moved to this place in the 1600's and arrived here in the Mayflower. They moved here for religious freedom. |
Jamestown | This colony in America was founded in 1607. They harvested a lot of tobacco here. |
