Questão Responda
What drug class is allopurinol, and what is it used to treat? Xanthine-oxidase inhibitor - prevents breakdown of purines which produce uric acid. Used to treat gout
What are the side effects of allopurinol? GI upset - diarrhoea
What should you beware of when prescribing azathioprine and allopurinol together? Azathioprine is metabolised into mercaptopurine and therefore its breakdown is slowed down when co-prescribed with allopurinol. It should therefore be replaced with an alternative agent or the dose of azathioprine reduced to take into account the effects of allopurinol on metabolism.
When should allopurinol be given? At least 2 weeks after an acute attack of gout, as it can precipitate acute attacks.
