In 1517, Pope Leo X needed money. So what did he do and who did he send? He started to sell indulgences to people to raise money. He sent Friar Tetzel to Germany.
What is an indulgence? A piece of paper which promised you to go to heaven. It was supposed to forgive your sins if you bought it.
Luther did not agree with the sale of indulgences. What did he think of them? And what was the name of his new book that he wrote about it? He though it was making forgiveness a matter of money. He wrote a book called The 95 Thesis.
