Why and in what ways do Christian families raise their children to believe in God? | - They believe it is their duty to marry, have a family and raise their children within the Christian faith - Christians believe their religion gives children a secure basis and helps them through difficulties. - Baptism, Worship, School, Confirmation, Parent's examples, Community. |
What are the 4 types of religious experiences? | - Numinous (The feeling of the presence of something greater than you) - Conversion (When your life is changed by giving yourself to God) - Prayer (An attempt to contact God, usually through words.) - Miracle (Something which seems to break the laws of science - only God could have done it) |
What are two arguments which try to prove God's existence? | - The Design Argument (Paley's Watch) - The universe is too complex to have happened by chance or be designed by anyone other than God. - The Causation Argument - Everything has a cause and the only possible cause of the universe is God. |
What are arguments against the Design and Causation arguments for the creation of the universe? | - The design argument only suggests that God is the designer, it cannot be proven as with the causation argument. - The appearance of design could be the cause of evolution. - The 'Big Bang' theory is another possible cause of the universe. - What caused God? |
What are the scientific explanations for the origins of the world? | - The 'Big Bang' Theory - An explosion created the universe. - Evolution and natural selection- Species naturally select the best characteristics for survival. |
How do Christians respond to these scientific explanations? | - The Bible's description of the creation of the world is more of a story. - The six days of creation were 'stages,' not actual periods of time. - Science explains how the world was created and the Bible explains why. - Creationists believe the scientific explanations are wrong -they conflict with the Bible. |
What are the problems with unanswered prayers, and how might Christians respond? | - People may think that God isn't listening or does not exist if their prayers are unanswered. - They must keep trying, God may not be listening, God does not answer selfish prayers, what they are praying for may not be part of God's will or divine plan. |
Evil and suffering is a reason some people choose not to believe in God. How do Christians explain and respond to this? | - Free will (God gave people free will - the ability to make choices for themselves.) - Test from God (Evil and suffering is a test from God to see how people will react and become stronger.) - God's plan (People should trust God because he knows why everything happens.) - Following Jesus' example (People can strive to do good.) Responses - Praying, helping others, volunteering, strengthening their faith. |
How does the media affect belief in God? | POSITIVE - Some programmes show how religion can benefit the life of an individual and how it can be a positive thing. NEGATIVE - Sometimes religion is seen as something to laugh at, question God's existence, or that there is something wrong with being religious. |
Do Christians believe in life after death? | All Christians believe in life after death. > Protestants 1. Jesus told a thief on the cross that he would be in heaven one day. 2. Some Christians think that the paranormal is evidence of an after life. > Evangelical Christians 1. Jesus' body was raised from the dead. 2. The Creed (St Paul): 'I believe n the resurrection of the body and everlasting life'. > Roman Catholics 1. Resurrection of Jesus 2. The creed which says Jesus 'is seated at the right hand of the father and will come again to judge the living and the dead.' |
Christians believe that after death, their body stays in the grave, and the soul goes to god for judgement. What effect does this have on their lives? | Christians try to live within the guidelines of the Bible and the Church e.g. > Confession - Repent for their sins > Prayer - communicating with God > Doing good work > Putting Christian teachings into action > Vocation - dedicating their lives to God through jobs e.g. Doctor, Priest etc. |

What are some non-religious reasons to believe in life after death? | > Near-death experiences - When someone about to die has an out of body experience. > Reincarnation - The belief that after death, the soul is reborn into a new body. > Paranormal activity - Unexplained things which are thought to have spiritual causes e.g. ghosts, mediums. |
Why do some people reject all ideas of an afterlife? | > Evidence - There is no evidence of an afterlife, mediums are tricking people. > Science - Explains everything in our world, and we should not believe things which are unscientific. > Humans are mortal > Religion is outdated - beliefs in Heaven and Hell, religion offers no good evidence. |
