Questão Responda
What is the chemical equation of the thermal decomposition of limestone? CaCO3(s) > CaO(s) + CO2(g)
What is limestone, mainly? Calcium carbonate CACO3
What is the resulting process of heating limestone called? Thermal decomposition
What other elements/compounds have the same chemical equation when thermally decomposing? Magnesium, copper, zinc and sodium carbonates.
What is the chemical equation of limestone reacting with sulfuric acid? CaCO3 + H2SO4 > CaSO4 + CO2 + H20
What other carbonates react with acids? Magnesium, copper, zinc and sodium.
Calcium oxide + water = ? Calcium hydroxide - Ca(OH)2
What is a use of calcium hydroxide in fields and why? It can be used to neutralise acidic soil. Powdered limestone can be used too but calcium hydroxide is much quicker.
How can it also be used as a test? By making a solution of calcium hydroxide in water, called limewater.
What is it a test for? Carbon dioxide - CO2
How can you tell if the test comes out positive? The water will turn cloudy.
Why is this? Because of the formation of calcium carbonate.
What is the formula? Ca(OH)2 + CO2 > CaCO3 + H2O
Name three things that limestone can also be used for/to make? Cement, mortar and concrete.
