What did they propose at a mass meeting? Continuing the boycott until: seats were given on first come, first served blacks were respected by bus drivers bus company hired black drivers
When the boycott continued, what did Montgomery's mayor predict? 'Come the first rainy day and the Negroes will be back on the buses'
What did blacks do instead? Walk and cycle to work or got lifts from friends in cars
What did some organise? Taxi services, charing 10c for a ride
What did the city then do? Revive an old law that forbade taxis to charge less than 45c, more than blacks could afford
What did King set up? Where did donations to pay for it come from? A private taxi service Black and white sympathisers across America
How did Whites retaliate to the boycott? Activists were sacked from jobs Police harassed black drivers Black citizens were assaulted, sometimes even fired on by snipers
How did whites try to discredit MLK? Spreading rumours he was embezzling funds
What was he arrested for? Breaching Alabama's anti-boycotting laws Found guilty and fined $500
What else happened to MLK? His home was bombed while his wife and baby were in it
What did King demand? Black mobs put away guns and 'love out white brothers no matter what they do to us'
What did NAACP do when there was no compromise? Took a case against bus segregation and won
How long did the boycott go on for in total? What day did the boycott achieve its aims? 382 days 21 December 1956
Who rode in the front seats of the first integrated bus? Nixon, King and Parks and other black people
What did Montgomery change about segregation? Very little Segregation continued in other parts of life
What did the boycott undermine What did it demonstrate? The idea that blacks were happy being second class citizens Tenacity and courage of black people
What tactics became the model for the successful civil rights campaigns? Non-violent protest and legal action
