Employment Structure | The proportion of people who work in each of the sectors of the economy. |
Primary Industry | The Extraction of raw materials from the ground or the sea. E.g. farming, Fishing or Mining. |
Secondary Industry | The Manufacturing of goods using raw materials from primary industries. |
Tertiary Industry | Does not produce anything but often involves the provision of different services. E.g. Teachers, Lawyers and Sales Assistants are all tertiary occupations. |
Raw Materials | Anything that occurs in a natural state that is useful to people. |
Mechanisation | The increased use of machinery to do tasks that people once did. |
Globalisation | The Process which has created a more connected world, with increases in the movement of goods and people worldwide. |
Accesibility | The ease with which people can get to a particular place. |
Deindustrialisation | When industry Moves Away from a area. |
Sectoral Shift | The Gradual change from an economy based on primary sectors, to one based on secondary to an economy based on tertiary and quaternary industry. |
Development | The way a country progresses and improves over time, usually measured by rising incomes and better quality of life. |
Infrastructure | The Facilities which provide essential framework for industry. E.g. roads, Power supply and sewage. |
Quaternary Industry | Consists of those industries providing information services such as computing, ICT, Consultancy and R&D. Sometimes included as part of the tertiary sector. |
