what are hormones? | a regulatory substance produced in an organism and transported in tissue fluids such as blood or sap to stimulate specific cells or tissues into action. |
what are impulses? | something that causes something to happen or happen more quickly; an impetus. |
what is the nervous system? | the network of nerve cells and fibres which transmits nerve impulses between parts of the body. |
what are glands? | an organ in the human or animal body which secretes particular chemical substances for use in the body or for discharge into the surroundings. |
what does secrete mean? | (of a cell, gland, or organ) produce and discharge (a substance). |
what does stimuli mean? | a thing or event that evokes a specific functional reaction in an organ or tissue. |
what is a receptor? | an organ or cell able to respond to light, heat, or other external stimulus and transmit a signal to a sensory nerve. |
what are sense organs? | an organ of the body which responds to external stimuli by conveying impulses to the sensory nervous system |
what are neurones? | a specialized cell transmitting nerve impulses; a nerve cell |
what is the central nervous system (CNS) ? | The central nervous system (CNS) controls most functions of the body and mind. It consists of two parts: the brain and the spinal cord. The brain is the center of our thoughts, the interpreter of our external environment, and the origin of control over body movement. |
what are sensory neurones? | Sensory neurons are nerve cells that transmit sensory information (sight, sound, feeling, etc.). They are activated by sensory input, and send projections to other elements of the nervous system, ultimately conveying sensory information to the brain or spinal cord. |
what are motor neurones? | a nerve cell forming part of a pathway along which impulses pass from the brain or spinal cord to a muscle or gland. |
what are effector organs? | effector organs are organs which have an effect (usually via a biochemical pathway) on another organ. |
