BARBARIAN Term used by the Chinese to refer to anyone who was not Chinese or who lived outside Chinese borders.
ISOLATED - Cut off from - Separate from - Having no contact with
DYNASTY (plural: DYNASTIES) Line of rulers from the same family, and the time period during which they ruled.
PRIMARY SOURCE A source that was created at the time / in the time being investigated, e.g.: - bones, skeletons, items found in tombs - art : paintings, mosaics, sculptures - pottery, tools, weapons - household utensils, toys - letters, diaries, photographs
MANDATE OF HEAVEN Belief that the ruler has been chosen by the gods to rule.
MAUSOLEUM Room where dead bodies are buried or stored
INSCRIPTION Engraved or etched writing; writing on bone, shell, bronze or some other object
DAOISM Chinese religion that believes that nature works in harmony; following the Dao (the Way) will lead to happiness and health
CONFUCIUS Philosopher who taught about life and government; his sayings were collected by his followers and published as 'The Analects'; c. 500 BCE
TERRACOTTA WARRIORS Army of soldiers, made of terracotta or clay, that stood guard over the tomb of China's first Emperor.
PHILOSOPHER Thinker; person who studies and asks the deep questions of life - Who are we? Why are we here?
EMPEROR Supreme male ruler of an empire (one or more countries or regions)
FERTILE LAND Land that is rich in nutrients and is good for farming and producing crops
WARRING STATES PERIOD Period of time from 475-221 BCE when seven states fought each other for control of northern China.
PEASANT Tenant farmer who worked on land owned by the gentry; had to give half of everything they produced to their landlord and pay government taxes
BUREAUCRAT Government official from the gentry class (elite, privileged, wealthy) who was also a scholar (educated).
