Announcement Traffic Indication Message (ATIM) Frame sent between peers in an Ad Hoc network indicating that data is awaiting delivery to the station that receives the ATIM frame
Autonomous Access Point Access point containing full MAC layer processing locally on the AP. Also known as "fat" or "thick" APs. Required individual management.
Channel Stacking / Channel Spanning / Channel Blankets Used in Single Channel Architectures with WLANs being co-located in the same physical area on different 802.11 channels.
Co-channel Interference Occurs when two access point radios are providing RF coverage to the same physical area using the same channel.
Controller-based access point Access point part of a controller system. Also called "Split MAC" architecture. WLAN controllers communicate with controller-based APs (also called lightweight or thin). Controller does most of the intelligence in architecture.

ERP Extended Rate Physical (clause 19) Rate extension of the PHY for DSSS of Clause 15 and Clause 18 (HR/DSSS)
ERP-DSSS Required ERP modulation specified by 802.11g amendment. Has exceptions: Support of short PLCP PPDU header CCA Max input signal level is -20 dBm Locking transmit center frequency and symbol clock frequency to the same reference oscillator is mandatory
ERP-OFDM Required ERP modulation specified by 802.11g amendment Exceptions: Frequency plan in accordance with 18.4.6.1 and 18.4.6.2 CCA Frequency accuracy is +/- 25 PPM Max input signal level is -20 dBm Slot time is 20 microseconds SIFS time is 10 microseconds
ERP-PBCC Optional ERP modulation in 802.11g Single carrier modulation
Fast BSS Transition (FT) / Fast Secure Roaming (FSR) Fast, secure handoffs between APs within an ESS. Uses Robust Security Network features Roams using 4-Way handshake (802.11i) or over-the-air / over-the-DS exchanges (802.11r FT)
High Throughput Represents 802.11 Clause 20 PHY MIMO is used
HR/DSSS definition, data rates, supported by... High Rate Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum Introduced 5.5 and 11 Mbps data rates Backwards compatible with DSSS First supported by 802.11b Supported by 802.11g
IEEE 802.3-2005 Clause 33 PoE Refers to Power over Ethernet 802.3af DC power over Category 5 or greater
IEEE 802.11 standard 802.11-2007
Information Element Are flexible data structures within 802.11 management frames
Information Field Fixed-length, mandatory component in 802.11 management frames
MMPDU Medium Access Control (MAC) Management Protocol Data Unit Unit of data exchanged between two peer MAC entities using services of the PHY
MPDU Medium Access Control (MAC) Protocol Data Unit Exchanged between two peer MAC entities using the services of the PHY. Comprised of MSDU, MAC header, and a trailer
MSDU Medium Access Control (MAC) Service Data Unit Data presented to MAC service access point by upper layer protocols Can be comprised of data from LLC sublayer and/or any number of layers above the Data Link layer
MCA Multiple Channel Architecture Three or more channels used
Non-ERP Non Extended Rate Physical (clauses 15 and 18) Stations not ERP STAs but can interoperate with ERP STAs, specifically DSSS and HR/DSSS
Octet Describes 8 bits of data
OFDM, amendment use, frequency, and data rates Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing Introduced with IEEE 802.11a Used in 5 GHz 6, 9, 12, 18, 24, 36, 48, and 54 Mbps Mandatory of 6, 12, and 24 Mbps Not backwards compatible with HR/DSSS or DSSS
Power Save (PS) mode Power management of a station Operates in active mode or power-save mode STA in power-save mode is in awake or doze state Also known as Power Save Poll (PSP)
