Matter | Anything that has mass and takes up volume. |
Pure Substances | Matter that contains only one type of material and are uniform throughout. e.g. pure water |
Mixtures | Matter that contains two or more pure substances mixed together |
Homogeneous mixture / Solution | A mixture of one substance dissolved in another which cannot be seen; the different substances are evenly mixed in a solution |
Heterogeneous / Mechanical mixture | A mixture that contains more than one type of particle and the different particles are visible. |
Particle theory of matter | A theory that describes the composition and behaviour of matter |
Postulate 1 of particle theory of matter | All matter is made of particles and they have spaces between them. |
Postulate 2 of particle theory of matter | All substances have their own specific particles |
Postulate 3 of particle theory of matter | Particles are in constant motion |
Postulate 4 of particle theory of matter | Particles attract each other. |
Postulate 5 of particle theory of matter | Particles vibrate faster when heated. |
Alloy | A solid mixture of 2 or more metals e.g. solder is a combination of tin and copper |
Physical property | A characteristic of a substance that can be determined without changing the substance e.g. colour, texture, conductivity, state of form. |
chemical property | A characteristic of a substance that can be determined by changing the substance. e.g. flammability, combustibility, reactivity |
Physical change | A change in the physical state of form of matter without any change in the chemical composition and no new substances are formed. e.g. ice melting, chopping wood. |
Chemical change | A change in the the chemical composition of matter with the creation of new substances. e.g. exploding fireworks, burning fuel. |
characteristic physical property | A property that is unique to a substance and can be used to identify the substance e.g. Density, freezing point, melting point, boiling point, |
Element | A substance that cannot be made into simpler substances by ordinary means. E.g. Sodium (Na), Chlorine (Cl) |
Compound | A pure substance made of two or more different elements that are chemically combined. E.g. Table salt (NaCl) |
