Competence When someone lacks the knowledge or skill to make a change (easiest obstacle to change)
Confidence Person possess the skill and knowledge but they don't believe they can make the change (set small goals instead of huge ones)
Motivation Person possess confidence and competence but lacks a reason to change or act
Self Efficacy Belief in one’s ability to act or make a change
Chronological age How old you really are
Psychological age How old your body is based on how well you take care of yourself (you can change this "age" by making better lifestyle choices)
Passive, Assertive, Aggressive -ignoring the problem or walking away from something, showing that you do not care about what is going on -when one deals with the problem straight on, voicing their opinions or feelings about what is going on - when one uses anger or methods of “fighting dirty” to attempt to solve a problem, usually doesn’t turn out well.
How to cope with stress Physical activity- eases muscle tension, decreases anxiety, strengthens the amount of glucose and energy in your body Relaxation response- reduces blood pressure, slows the pulse, and releases tension ( you can relax anywhere) Meditating, deep breathing, and guided imagery
3 Stages of Stress Response -Alarm - Resistance - Recovery & Exhaustion
Alarm the phase in which you recognize that you are facing a challenge body releases stress hormones Immune system stops, heart rate increases, muscles tense
Resistance body is put into a state of imbalance muscles flex, digestive system and immune system stop working
Recovery or Exhaustion healthy stage body becomes balanced body systems slow down, body relaxes, muscles relax
Exhaustion - stress exceeds ability to recover body becomes exhausted, you become sick fat is released into system (heart disease)
Nervous System - the system that manages the body by sending messages between the brain, the spinal cord, and the nerves. (It’s like a cell phone) -Nerves senses a change -Change “shoots” up the spinal cord - Brain realizes what’s going on
The Hormonal System a system of glands that works with in cooperation with the nervous system
Gland secretes hormones in response to information about the bodies changes
Hormone a chemical messenger that is released from the gland
The Immune System the cell's tissues and organs that protect the body from disease -includes white blood cells, bone marrow, spleen, and thymus gland
White Blood Cells made in the bone marrow - makes antibodies to protect against infection - bodies man defense against disease
The Stimga the negative thoughts or ideas towards a group of people that are marginalized or given strong stereotypes
Anxiety - irrational fear of something (Ex: Public speaking) Different types: Social Anxiety, Panic (extreme irrational fear), Phobias (extreme irrational fear of a situation) Signs/ Symptoms: trouble sleeping, excessive worry, sweating or shaking, somatic complaints (body problems)
OCD - fixation on thoughts and behavior without the ability to stop thinking about said thing until it is done Signs/ symptoms: constant checking, ritualistic thoughts, eating disorders)
Depression - constant feelings of hopelessness or sadness, due to the immune system not functioning Signs/symptoms: Suicidal Ideation, feelings of hopelessness, somatic complaints, apathy
Schizophrenia - the lost of touch with reality, the imagination fills in the missing gaps in understanding Signs/ symptoms: delusions, bizarre behavior, fear and anxiety
Eating Disorders - extremely unhealthy eating habits. Weight obsessed. Causes permanent health issues Anorexia- restrict food or excessive exercise Bulimia- binge and purge, vomiting/laxative Binge eating: over-weighting/ overweight
Bipolar - Extreme mood swings ranging from depression to euphoria and anger Mania- euphoria, anger, poor judgement, psychotic Constantly on meds, ECT
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder - Serious stress reaction to a terrifying event, set off by loud triggers Causes: war, attack, bombing, rape crimes - Constantly on meds, ECT

Regression reacting to something painful in a childish way
Selective forgetting memory lapses concerning news too painful to deal with
Withdrawl avoiding people and activities to avoid pain
