What is a user interface? The means by which the user and a computer system interact, in particular the use of input devices and software. The user interface is one of the most important parts of any program because it determines how easily you can make the program do what you want. A powerful program with a poorly designed user interface has little value. Graphical user interfaces (GUIs) that use windows, icons, and pop-up menus have become standard on personal computers.
What does booting a computer mean? To boot a computer is to load an operating system into the computer's main memory or random access memory (RAM). To load the first piece of software that starts a computer. Because the operating system is essential for running all other programs, it is usually the first piece of software loaded during the boot process.
What is file management? A file manager or file browser is a computer program that provides a user interface to manage files and folders. Also referred to as simply a file system. The system that an operating system or program uses to organize and keep track of files. For example, a hierarchical file system is one that uses directories to organize files into a tree structure.
What are basic computer tasks? In computer programming, a task is a basic unit of programming that an operating system controls. Depending on how the operating system defines a task in its design, this unit of programming may be an entire program or each successive invocation of a program. Since one program may make requests of other utility programs, the utility programs may also be considered tasks (or subtasks). All of today's widely-used operating systems support multitasking , which allows multiple tasks to run concurrently, taking turns using the resources of the computer.
What are handles system devices? The Handle System is a technology specification for assigning, managing, and resolving persistent identifiers for digital objects and other resources on the Internet. The protocols specified enable a distributed computer system to store identifiers (names, or handles) of digital resources and resolve those handles into the information necessary to locate, access, and otherwise make use of the resources. That information can be changed as needed to reflect the current state and/or location of the identified resource without changing the handle.
What would happen if a computer did not have an operating system? You can, but your computer would stop working because Windows is the operating system, the software that makes it tick and provides a platform for programs, like your web browser, to run on. Without an operating system your laptop is just a box of bits that do not know how to communicate with one another, or you. Windows is by no means compulsory but it is usually the simplest option for most users because it is pre-installed on most computers, relatively easy to use, and Windows 7 is quite well behaved, but there is nothing to stop you from exploring the alternatives.
