What is a computer system? A computer system applies to any equipment which uses computer technology.
What is the definition of hardware? Hardware is the physical part of a computer that you can touch.
What is the definition of software? Software are the programs and apps that run on a computer system. They follow set instructions to perform tasks.
What does the four box model look like?
What is an input device? Can you think of any examples? An input device is any device that allows you to input data into a computer system. Keyboards, mouses, sensors, joysticks, digital cameras etc.
What is an output device? An output device is a device that is used by a computer system to output data. Speakers, headphones, monitors, printers, projectors etc.
What is an embedded system? An embedded system is a computer system with a dedicated function within a larger mechanical or electrical system, such as the computer that controls the functions of a washing machine.
Name some embedded devices Vending machines, washing machines, cars ATM machines, cameras, toys, microwaves, badge readers, GPS
What does RAM stand for and what is it? RAM stands for "random access memory" It is volatile and it stores the data that you are currently working on.
What is the difference between static RAM and dynamic RAM? Static RAM never has to be refreshed and it is faster than dynamic RAM. However, it is more expensive and it takes up more space. Dynamic RAM has to be refreshed often, otherwise it will forget what it is holding. . It is slower than static RAM but it is cheaper.
What does ROM stand for and what is it? ROM cannot be changed by a program or user. It is non-volatile and it stores the instructions for the computer to start again when it is turned on.
What does BIOS stand for and what is it? BIOS stands for Basic input/output system. It is stored in a flash memory chip and is responsible for inputs and outputs.
What is the bootstrap? The bootstrap loads a program into a computer using a much smaller initial program to load in the desired program.
Name one legal issue in the computing industry Avoiding injuring others Not bringing the profession in to disrepute Refusing to take bribes Not accepting tasks that are above your ability.
Name one environmental issue in the computing industry Throwing away working parts of a computer or computer system.
Name a legal issue in the computing industry Protecting people's privacy (the data protection act 1998)
What is virtual memory? Virtual memory is a section on a computer's hard disk that temporarily stores data that is not currently being used in RAM when it has no space left.
Why do we need virtual memory? We need it so that the computer doesn't crash when there is no space left on RAM.
What is cache? Cache is a fast form of RAM which allows quick access to data.
True or false? Cache is volatile True
Why can the CPU access data from cache quicker than it can access data from RAM? Cache is closer to the CPU
Why is it important that cache is always full? So that the CPU can access the data quickly
Which is bigger, RAM or cache? RAM is bigger

What does CPU stand for and what is it's purpose? CPU stands for central processing unit. The purpose of a CPU process data by fetching and executing from the RAM.
