Metamorphic rock = Rock that has been changed by natural agencies. Began as igneous/sedimentary rock but altered by heat or pressure.
Formation Contact with cooling igneous rocks intruding, or at edges of tectonic plates where v. high pressures/temperatures occur, as fold mountains are being formed - land being disturbed. THEY DO NOT MELT.
Examples Clay --> slate limestone --> marble
Characteristics Sometimes flake into layers. May be shiny and hard. Happens along destructive plate boundaries & fault lines. Regularly aligned crystals.
