what are stem cells? unspecialised/undifferentiated cells that can renew to produce new cells
where do stem cells come from? 1. embryos (embryonic stem cells) 2. adult tissue (adult stem cells)
why do stem cells raise moral issues and concerns? main criticism=requires the destruction of a fertilised human egg. some argue this is murder
where does growth occur in animals? all over the body
where does growth occur in plants? the meristems
what is a plants meristem? group of undifferentiated plant cells that can divide repeatedly to produce cells that can become any type of plant cell
the apical meristems are found.. at the root and shoot tips
the lateral meristems are found... in the stem/branch
what is growth? an irreversible increase in the dry mass of an organism
what is differentiation? the process which an unspecialised cell changes to be able to perform a function as part of a permanent tissue
what is mitosis? cell division within a plant. occurs at the meristems
