How long is food stored for in the stomach? 1 - 6 hours.
What is gastric juice? A mixture of chemicals produced by cells in the stomach wall.
What does gastric juice contain? - Hydrochloric acid. - Mucus. - Digestive juices.
What is hydrochloric acid? A strong acid that kills any bacteria that may have entered the body with the food.
What is mucus? Creates a layer on the lining of the stomach to stop the stomach from digesting itself.
What are digestive juices? Contains chemicals that start the digestion of protein.
Is the duodenum the first or second part of the small intestine? First.
What does the pancreas do? Produces pancreatic juice that contains chemicals that help digest carbohydrates.
What is the body's largest internal organ? The liver.
What is bile? It is a greenish liquid that chemically digests fats.
What is found on the inner lining of the small intestine? Villi.
What does it do? Increases the surface area of the wall of the small intestine.
How long is the small intestine? It can be up to 6 meters long.
How long is the large intestine? 1.5 meters long.
What happens in the large intestine? Water and remaining nutrients are absorbed from the left-over food.
How does the body get rid of the wastes? Throw a sphincter muscle at the end of the digestive tract called an anus.
What causes vomiting? Stress and infections can cause the muscular wall of the stomach and small intestine to contract which means the contents of the stomach are forces back up through the oesophagus.
What is heartburn? It is the burning feeling rising up your oesophagus from your stomach.
Why does it burn when you feel contents of the stomach coming up your oesophagus? It burns because your oesophagus does not have mucus lining it to protect it from stomach acids. The burning sensation is the stomach acid attacking the lining of the oesophagus.
How does your appendix become swollen and inflamed? When the opening of it is blocked and the appendix starts to fill with mucus.
How do you treat an inflamed appendix? You have to remove the appendix through an operation before it bursts and causes even more pain.
