What is Archaeology? Archaeology is the study of material evidence, such as human remains, tools and pottery
Much of the work of an archaeologist is? Fieldwork
What is the difference between a historian and archaeologist? A historian is mainly concerned about written records while archaeologists are mainly concerned with material evidence
Who can an archaeologists team include? Diggers, drafts people, surveyors, photographers and conservators.
What are some of the tools the team might need? brushes, hand trowels, small picks and hammers, fine dental tools, sifting screens, buckets to remover debris, notebooks, pencils, tags, information cards, cameras and surveying equipment.
What could lots of arrowheads found in the similar location indicate? It may indicate a battle.
When and where were the Artefacts found by Schlimann rediscovered? in Moscow Russia, in 1993.
What is Mohenjo-Daro? Mohenjo-Daro was the largest and most complex city of Indus Valley civilization in Ancient India. The site dates from between 2600 and 1800 BC. It was accidentally found in 1924 AD when the Buddhist stupa was excavated.
What is a Buddhist stupa? A dome with a significant relic inside.
Approximately how large was the Mohenjo-Daro in size? 250 hexteds
Where is the lowest strata of the city? The lowest strata of the city are under water and have not yet been excavated.
What are some of the challenges an Archaeologist may face? -The artifacts are often fragile -Changes to the environment -Air pollution
What are the two types of dating? relative and absolute
How does dating help archaeologists and historians? It helps them develop a chronology, or arrangement of dates, events and so on.
What are the the types of relative dating? Typology- a date is given for an object because it is of the same type as another object for which the date is known. Association- a date is given for an object because it is found next to another object for which the object is known. Stratigraphy- a date is given for an object because it is found in the same stratum, or layer of earth, as another object which the date is known.
What is Stratigraphy based on? It is based on the principle that older strata are found underneath more recent strata.
What is relative dating? Relative dating involves lose examination of the object's contect. It is the older of the two types of dating and is approximate.
What is absolute dating? It is a more modern and precise form of dating material evidence.
What are 2 types of absolute dating? analysis of ancient calendars. scientific analysis of varves which can tell us about climatic conditions?
What are varves? ice sheets produced every year in very cold areas.
