George Villiers (Buckingham) | He was knighted in 1614 and rose to become the Duke of Buckingham in 1623, the only non royal duke in 100 years. |
Royal Favourites | Royal favourites were an issue in James' reign. He had numerous Scottish friends who came with him to England. |
Robert Carr | In 1607 James met Robert Carr who he later used as an advisor and built up a party of supporters at court. |
Parliamentary support and royal favourites | Towards the end of his reign James found that he had very few supporters in the House of Commons as he had appointed all of his 'favourites' to the House of Lords. |
The Spanish Match | To secure a better relationship with Spain, James began to pursue the Spanish Match which focused on marrying Charles I and Infanta Maria. In February 1623, Charles and Buckingham travelled to Spain together incognito where they became very close friends. |
Financial Problems | James lavished his favourites with eccentric gifts contributing to his vast expenditure. |
Charles' Issues With Buckingham | The most important problem in Charles' first parliament were the measures taken against Buckingham (they wanted to impeach him) as the Earl of Arundel has been sent to the Tower of London for in theory an offence against Charles but in practice an offence against Buckingham. Charles eventually became so concerned for Buckingham's safety that he dissolved the session. |
Buckingham's Assassination | On the 23rd August 1628 Buckingham was assassinated at the Greyhound Inn by John Felton. This affected Charles greatly and led to him becoming closer to his wife Henrietta Maria (a known Catholic) which acted to increase the growing threat of Catholicism. |
