Anatomy "Ana" apart, "tomy" to cut: to study the bodies of organisms internally and externally
Physiology "Phys" the function, "logy" the study of: the study of the functioning of the body (motion, force, growth)
Homeostasis "Homeo" alike or the same, "stasis" stagnation: the process of the body maintaining normal functions
Negative feedback When a process is occurring, an opposite stimulus will be supplied to disrupt, stop, or slow down the process
Positive feedback When a process is occurring, a parallel stimulus helps to encourage more of this process
Body cavities The internal sections of the bodies (thoracic, cranial, abdominal...)
Thoracic cavity The cavity that houses the ribs, lungs, heart, and upper esophagus (upper torso)
Cranial cavity The cavity that houses the brain (upper hemisphere of the head)
Spinal cavity The cavity that houses the vertebrae (length wise portion down torso on posterior side)
Abdominopelvic cavity The cavity that houses the major organs in the body including most digestive and all reproductive organs (lower torso)
Umbilical region The region centered in the middle of the abdominopelvic cavity
Epigastric region This region is above the umbilical region, centered in the abdominal cavity (liver, stomach, and diaphragm)
Hypogastric region The region inferior to the umbilical region, housing the reproductive organs and urinary bladder
Illiac region The right and left iliac region are situated on the sides of the abdominopelvic cavity (inferior to the lumbar region)
Lumbar region Superior to the iliac region on the left and right sides of the body
Hypochondriac region Superior to the lumbar region on the left and right sides of the body
Sagittal section The plane in which the body is divided down the center from front to back into two parallel sides
Gross anatomy Anatomy studied with the naked eye
Histology Study of organs, cells, and tissues using a microscope
Pathology Study of abnormal conditions
Surface anatomy Study of visible things on the surface of skin, or felt by palpitation
