What is meant by being in an 'Agentic state'? A mental state where we feel no personal responsibility for out behaviour as we believe ourselves to be acting for an authority figure.
What is meant by being in an autonomous state? This is the opposite of the Agentic state where you act independently or freely and feel a sense of responsibility for their actions.
What is meant by the Agentic Shift? The shift between autonomy and agency.
When does a Agentic Shift occur? When a person perceives someone else as a figure of authority
What are buffers? Buffers are the reason why an individual remains in the agentic state. They are aspects of the situation that allow the person to ignore or minimise the damaging affect of their behaviour.
What is meant by legitimacy or authority? Society's are built in a hierarchical way, which means people in certain positions hold authority over others. It is agreed on by society and we accepts that they can exercise social power over others to allow society to function smoothly.
What is meant by destructive authority? This is when the legitimate authority becomes destructive purposes.
What is the research support this? (strength) Blass and Schmitt showed a film of Mailgram's study to students and they correctly identified obedience as the result of legitimate authority.
What is a limitation for the Agentic shift? It has a limited explanation because it fails to explain why some people don't obey even though we have all grown up in a hierarchical society.
What is a strenght for Legitimate authority? It is useful to show the cultural differences of obedience. some cultures are more likely to accept legitimate authority.
