Questão Responda
What two psychologists did animal studies to measure attachment? Lorenz and Harlow
What did Lorenz want to find out? Wanted to study the phenomenon of imprinting
What was the procedure of Lorenz's study? randomly divided a clutch of goose eggs. Half the eggs were hatched with their mother, and half in an incubator where the first moving object they saw was Lorenz.
What were the findings of Lorenz's study? the incubator group followed lorenz everywhere.
What is this called? Imprinting
What is meant by the critical period? a period of time where imprinting needs to take place. Depending on species this can vary
What did Lorenz find out about sexual imprinting? He also found that the thing an animal imprints on, is often the one they show sexual behaviour towards
What is a limitation of Lorenz's study? there is a problem in generalizing findings from birds and ducks to humans. Human attachment seems to be quite different from that of birds
What is another limitation of Lorenz's study? Lorenz's conclusions on sexual imprinting have been questioned because Guiton et al. found that you can learn to prefer mating with others.
What did Harlow want to study? He wanted to study the effect of comfort in attachment
What was the procedure of Harlow's study? He had 16 baby monkeys and gave them a choice between to wire monkeys. One with milk, and one covered in cloth.
What were the findings of Harlow's study? The baby monkeys had a preference to the soft cloth monkey because they could cuddle it - especially when frightened.
What did the results of Harlow's study show? They showed that contact comfort was more important than food when it comes to attachment.
What is a strength of Harlow's study? We can apply it to real life and so it can help us prevent the risks associated with child abuse and neglect
What is a limitation of Harlow's study? It is extremely unethical, and the monkeys suffered greatly.
