About Antioch | It was held by the Muslims. Home of Luke the Apostle. One of the few christian cities that had a patriarch. Strategic city that was hard to Attack. |
What happened in Antioch | It was impossible for the crusaders to stop food supplies getting in because the wall was 25 miles long. Lost many horses and disease broke out. Crusaders starved. Crusaders deserted including Peter the Hermit. |
Jerusalem | 25'000 crusaders embarked on the final march to Jerusalem. Many thousands had died either in battle or disease. Many had already abandoned. |
The Templars | Body of men who were used to defend the Pilgrims. Bernard of Clairvaux wrote the Templars rule and it was accepted. |
Rule of the Templars | Augustinian rule. Focused on the correct behaviour of knights in battle, discipline, equipment and hierarchy of the order. As well as chastity, poverty and obedience. |
Hosptiallars | Also followed Augustinian rule but focused more on medicine. Precursors, St Johns ambulance. Other order of fighting monks. Predated crusades as a hospice to care for sick pilgrims. Godfrey of Bouillon was an early supporter. |
