Coast The coast is the boundary between the land and the sea
Hydraulic action The constant force of water against the shore wears it away
Abrasion Particles of sand and rock in the waves grind cliffs down
Attrition Water causes rocks and pebbles to collide and break up
Corrosion Acids in the sea slowly dissolve certain types of rock
Cracks The sea attacks small cracks and open them
Sea caves The crack gets larger and develops into a small cave
Arch When the caves wars right through the headland, an arch forms
Stack Further erosion causes the arch to collapse. This leaves a pillar of rock standing away from the coast.
Beach A beach is a very common feature on the coastline. It's in the middle of where the land meets the sea. Usually it is made of sad or pebbles. A beach is formed b rocks that are deposited from land by the sea
Spits A spit is formed when sand and shingle from the coast is swept out in the sea. It's a beach that extends towards the bay or mouth of a river. It is only affected when the change of coastline happens. Erosion from the coastline is ere most of the deposition is coming from
Longshore drift
Swash When a wave breaks, water is washed up the beach
Backwash The water runs back down the beach at a 90° due to gravity
Rock groyne Prevents longshore drift
