What is diffusion? | Diffusion is the net movement of particles moving into an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentraion |
Why can diffusion occur in both liquids and gases? | Because the particles in these substances are free to move about randomly |
How would you describe something moving from an area of higher concentration into an area of lower concentration? | Moving down it's concentration gradient |
What do cell membranes do? | Hold cells together and control the movement of substances in and out of the cell |
How do cell membranes control the movement of substances in and out of the cell? | Through diffusion, active transport and osmosis |
Where do particles move through the cell membrane? | From where there is an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration |
What happens if there is a higher concentration of particles on one side of the membrane? | There is a net movement from that side |
What is active transport? | Active transport is the movement of particles across a membrane against the concentration gradient using ATP released during respiration. |
Give an example of active transport | Active transport of nutrients from the blood into the gut. |
What is osmosis? | Osmosis is the net movement of water molecules across a partially permeable membrane from a region of higher water concentration to a region of lower water concentration |
What is a partially permeable membrane? | A membrane with very small holes in it which only lets small molecules (e.g. water) pass through it |
What is water potential? | Water potential is the potential of water molecules moving into or out of a solution. |
What does water potential tell you? | How concentrated a solution is |
If something is turgid, what is it? | Plump and swollen |
What is turgor pressure? | When the contents of a cell push against the cell wall |
What factors effect diffusion? | - Concentration gradient - Temperature - Distance particles must travel - Surface area |
When would diffusion occur faster? | - Large concentration gradient - Higher temperature - Shorter distance - Large surface area |
