Seizure: Is the clinical manifestation of an abnormal and excessive excitation/synchronization of neuronal firing from a population of cortical neurons OR Is induced by sudden excessive electrical activity in the brain which disrupts the normal communication between brain cells
Epilepsy: Is defined as a tendency to have recurrent unprovoked seizures (Fits)
Epileptogenesis: Sequence of events that converts a normal neuronal network into a hyperexcitable circuit
Status Epilepticus (SE) 1. Is the term used to describe recurrent seizures without recovery of consciousness between fits - or Status Epilepticus (SE) 2. A single prolonged ictal spell lasting more than ~20 min
Convulsion: The major involuntary motor manifestation of a seizure (rhythmic jerking of the limbs) Or - An intense, paroxysmal and involuntary muscular contraction
Aura: Subjective disturbance of perception that indicates the start of a seizure (experienced before the seizure) >> (represents a focal/localized electrical discharge at the start of the seizure)
Simple epilepsy Activity while person is alert
Complex epilepsy Activity with change in awareness
Secondary generalised epilepsy Activity starts in one area and spread
Absence epilepsy Staring & blinking
Myoclonic epilepsy Short jerking movements of parts of the body
Tonic-conic epilepsy Convulsion, going stiff & falling
Tonic epilepsy Going stiff & falling without convulsion
Atonic epilpesy Falling limply to the ground
