The Treaty of Versailles Terms: -Guilt -Armed Forces -Reparations -Germany's land and colonies -League of Nations | REMEMBER!! GARGLE!! |
Guilt: This is a simple clause yet seen very horrible for Germany; they had to accept all blame for starting the war (despite the fact Austria-Hungary originally declared it on Serbia!) | TERM NO. 1 |
Armed Forces: Germany's army was a real concern for the LON -Army is limited to 100,000 men (no conscription) -No armoured vehicles, submarines or aircraft -6 Battleships -The Rhineland (between Germany and France) is demilitarised -North Schleswig went to Denmark -Alsace Lorraine is given back to France | -Anschluss (union with Austria) is forbidden -Danzig is run by the LON so Poland get passage to the sea -West Prussia and Posen go to Poland -Upper Silesia to Poland -Part of East Prussia is given to Lithuania -Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia become independent |
League of Nations: Previous methods of keeping international peace had failed so this was set up as an 'International Police Force'. Germany was not invited to the LON until it had shown it was a 'peace-loving country' | This is one of Woodrow Wilsons Fourteen Points |
Reparations: The major powers agreed without consulting Germany that they had to pay reparations. In 1921, it was set £6,600 million! | If the term hadn't been altered under the Young Plan in 1929, Germany would have just finished paying the bill in 1984! |
Land and Colonies: -All of Germany's overseas empire was taken away -Togoland and Cameroon were run by Britain and France -German South West Africa went to South Africa -New Guinea to Australia -Samoa to New Zealand -The Marshall, Mariana and Caroline islands went to Japan -German East Africa to Britain | This was the most complicated part of the Treaty. |
