Impeachment | To formally charge an elected official with wrongdoing(s). The HOR votes to impeach. If the HOR votes yes, then there's a trial in the Senate. |
Enumerated Powers | Aka- Expressed powers; powers given only to the congress. ( Article One Section 8). |
Reserved POwers | Powers that are "reserved" for the state governments. |
Concurrent POwers | Shared powers between the national government and the states' legislatures. Ex- power to tax. |
Writ of habeas corpus (Latin means "have the body") | Article 1 Section 9 - states congress cannot suspend a person's right to writ of habeas corpus EXCEPT in cases of rebellion or invasion. |
Bill of Attainder | Congress can NOT make a law that finds a person guilty of treason or a felony without a trial. |
Ex post facto laws | (Latin "after the fact") Congress can NOT make a law that punishes someone for doing something that wasn't a crime when they did it. |
Article 2 | Is about the executive branch. |
Qualifications to be President | 1. Must be at least 35 years old. 2. Must be a natural born citizen. 3. Must live in the U.S for at least 14 years. |
Commander-in-Chief | Means the president is over the U.S Military. |
Article 3 | Is about the Judicial Branch. Aka the Judiciary; says there will be a supreme court and leaves it up to the Congress to create inferior or lower courts. |
Article 4 | Relations between the states; includes the Full Faith and Credit Clause. (Each state will respect the laws of other states). |
Article 5 | Amending the Constitution; proposed by 2/3rds of both houses in Congress, then it needs to be ratified by 3/4ths of the states. |
Article 6 | Supremacy Clause; it means the constitution is the supreme law of the land. |
Article 7 | Says 9 of the 13 original states had to ratify or vote yes before the Constitution went into effect. |
