PARENTHESE Parentheses and dashes serve many of the same functions, but they differ in one significant respect: parentheses can set off only nonessential elements, where as dashes can set off essential and nonessential elements. Remember: In setting off elements, dashes emphasize; parentheses de-emphasize. Example: n three of our factories (Atlántico, Bolívar, Magdalena) sales have gone up. Sales have gone down in our Cali (Valle) office. Parenthese can be used with: * Reference:(see pages 93 to 102) * Dates: (1716) * Enumerated items within a sentence: Lee’ s experience (1) the number of years she worked for your company, (2) a description of her duties, and (39 the number of promotions she received.
Note: Letters are used to enumerate items within a sentence when the sentence itself is part of a numbered sequence. Example: 3. Please include these items on your expense account (a) the cost of your hotel room; (b) the cost of meals, including tips; and (c) the amount you spent on transportation Note: If the item in parentheses is to be incorporated at the end of a sentence, place the punctuation needed to end the sentence outside the closing parentheses. Example: Please hand in your typing work by Monday (August 10). How can I reach John Blacksmith (he teaches at the Colombo)? *Do not use a period before the closing parenthesis except with an abbreviation. Our office is open late on Thursdays (until 9 p.m.)

QUOTATION MARKS. Quotation marks have three main functions: to indicate the use of someone else’s exact words: Example “ If you want to lose weight, don’ t eat sweets,” said Gloria.
