The Nile River was the main water source for the Ancient Egyptians. It was a very special place to live near. Where did it start and finish? It started in the high mountains of Ethipoia, south of Egypt. It runs through the desert on its way north to the Mediterranean sea.
What was different about how it flowed? It ran from south to north. Most rivers go north to south.
What was the Nile used for? Drinking, cooking, washing, fish for eating, a passgeway for fast transformation by boat, flowers for decoration and papyrus plants for making paper.
It was described as "the gift of the Nile" in 5 BC by who? The Greek historian, Herodotus
What is the name of the place where it splits into two large branches and many small ones? The Delta
The Flood season called Akhet was important. The farmers worked for the Pharohs during this time. If it flooded to big, the property would be washed out. When in the year did this occur? From mid- July to October
Peret occurs from November to February. What season is it and what do the farmers do then? It is seed time. They plough the fields after the flood. The slit is left over and they hope the plants will grow.
