'Sat, Slumped like a half-filled sack' Assisi- seems like the dwarf is deflating.
'bobbing along' Visiting Hour- assonance to emphasis he feels adrift, lost (in the hospital without his friend/relative)
'clatter came... crossing' Sounds of the Day- alliteration- mimics the loud sound of the horses hooves.
'tiny twisted' Assisi- harsh 't' mirrors the pain.
'fang is fixed' Visiting Hour- emphasises that the I.V. has to remain to support her life but MacCaig is horrified by it.
'creaked' Sounds of the Day- Onomatopoeia - Describes sound of movement of the air under the bird's wings, eerie sound.
'suffering of His Son' Assisi- highlight the priest amazement of what he's been depicted in the paintings. MacCaig feels that the priest should be more interested in the teachings of God and not on the frescoes.
'guzzling but giving' Visiting Hour- Alliteration of the gutteral 'g' sound conveys the harshness of the poet's feelings towards it.
'premises... private' Sounds of the Day- Alliteration.
'snuffling puff' Sounds of the Day- sounds of water being forced as hole in rock is blocked/unblocked. MacCaig is upset.
'clucking contentedly' Assisi- Shows lack of intelligent comments made.
'can cross' Visiting Hour- Alliteration of guttural 'c' sound emphasises the unpleasant situation.
'blocking...unblocking...rock...black Sounds of the Day- harsh sound of 'ck' sound gives rough sounds to elements of nature - the sounds are harsh as they are associated with the breakup.
'scraped shut' Sounds of the Day- sibilant sounds - mimics sound of door closing.
