| What is meant with: Dominant culture? | The culture accepted by everyone in ethnic society. Mostly determined by political/economical elite. |
| What is meant with sub-cultures? | Smaller groups within the society (mostly) upholding the values and norms of the dominant culture BUT with their own habits, values, etc. that differ from the dom. culture. |
| What is an ethnical sub-culture? | being a member of a group of people or originating from a certain country. |
| What is a counter-culture? | group of people who oppose the DC and do not want to take part of it and form a threat to it and do not want to join the DC. |
| socialisation | the process by which someone, consciously is thought the values, norms and other cultural features of his group. |
| what are socialising institutions? | institutions and organizations within which and through which the transfer of culture takes place in a society. (Kerstmist, carnaval, etc.) |
| Enculturation | When you learn the cultural characteristics of your group on your mother's knee. |
| Acculturation | Learning the characteristics of a culture you were not originally member of. |
| Internalisation | Certain aspects of the culture or community you belong to become so much a part of you that you automatically behave in the way that is expected of you. |
| Group identification | People feel they belong to both the dominant culture and the culture of a smaller group. |
