How does a coal power station make electricity with coal/oil/natural gas? | The coal/oil/natural gas is burned in a boiler, to boil water, which then turns into steam. The steam flows through the steam pipe very quickly, when it reaches the turbines, it turns them. The steam, after turning the turbines, goes through another pipe to a condenser or cooling tower, which turns it back into water. The turbine drives a generator which produces electricity which is distributed to the National Grid |
How is a Wind Turbine different to a Coal Power Station | - no air pollution - fuel is free |
Method of Wind Energy | Wind turns a turbine which turns a generator which produces electricity. |
Advantages of Wind Energy Resource | - Fuel is free - No air pollution - Take up little land and are placed away from urban areas |
Disadvantages of Wind Energy Resource | - Individual turbines are inefficient - Wind doesn't always blow -Ugly/noisy |
Method of Hydroelectric Energy Source | Water in a reservoir falls through a dam and turns a turbine which turns a generator which produces electricity. |
Advantages of Hydroelectric Energy Source | - No air pollution -Fuel is free - You can turn the power station on or off |
Disadvantages of Hydroelectric Energy Source | - Flood the land, environmental damage - Can only be built in specific areas - Long to build |
Biomass Energy Source Method | Burn wood or natural substance to boil water to produce steam which turns a turbine which turns a generator which produces electricity. |
Advantages of Biomass Energy Resource | - It's carbon neutral -You can burn waste -Readily available |
Disadvantages of Biomass Energy Resource | - Produces air pollution -Fuel isn't free Trees take long to grow |
