What punishments can be used? imprisonment, suspended sentence, probation, community service, fine
Why is imprisonment often used? protect the public and the ultimate deterrant
disadvantage of imprisonment? costly for the state
What can be done in prisons to aid rehabilitation? treatment programmes
Why treat offenders? Beneficial to the state if they stop reoffending - can get a job and put money into economy. Prevent more crime. Beneficial to the individual - may prevent suicide/ be happier. Protect rest of society.
Anger management programmes are based on the idea that... anger is a primary cause of violent criminal acts - once controlled, rates of recidivism will decrease
What is the first stage? Cognitive Preparation - careful analysis of anger patterns allows the individual to identify triggers
What is the second stage Skill acquisition - the teaching of techniques to use when the triggers for anger come. Could include self-awareness that an anger-provoking situation is developing, self-talk to stop the aggressive reaction, relaxation training
What is the third stage? Application practice - creation of stressful situations that provoke anger so that the newly learned techniques can be applied - this is then an assessment of how the individual handles themselves
What year was Law? 1997
What did they report? that only one individual who completed an 8 week course showed any improvement (refutes)
What year was Hunter? 1993
What did they report? considerable improvements in specific areas such as a reduction in impulsiveness, depression and interpersonal problems (supports)
What year was Ireland? 2000
What did they find? an experimental group who had completed the programme showed significantly less angry behaviours and scored lower on self-reported angry behaviours than a control group (supports - however self-report can be biased)
What is a weakness of anger management? can only be applied to hostile aggression not controlled instrumental aggression (reductionist)
