Aim Statement of what the researcher intends to find out
Hypothesis A precise and testable statement about the assumed relationship about variables. Operationalisation is a key part of making a statement testable
Confounding Variable Any variable which varies systematically with the independent variable that might potentially affect the dependent variable
Independent Variable An event that is directly manipulated by an experimenter to test its effects on another variable
Dependent Variable The variable that is measured by the experimenter
Operationalise Ensuring that variables are in a form that can be exactly tested
Standardised Procedures A set of procedures that are the same for all participants in order to be able to repeat the study
Alternative Hypothesis Any hypothesis except the null
Directional Hypothesis A hypothesis which states the predicted difference between two conditions or two groups of participants
Non-directional Hypothesis A hypothesis that simply predicts that there is a difference between two conditions or two groups of participants, without stating the direction of the difference
Null Hypothesis The assumption of no difference/ relationship between variables being studied
Co- Variable Variables in a correlation, they must be continuous and related
