Secondary Socialisation The socialisation that occurs outside of the home/ family. We learn norms, values and behaviour appropriate to our society
Social Solidarity A feeling of unity and belonging based on shared beliefs and values
Specialised Division of Labour Special skills for one specific job in the labour market
Meritocracy Effort + Ability = Reward. People receive rewards such as higher pay or promotion on the basis of merit or ability
Value Consensus An agreement over basic morals and values of society
Particularistic Values Children are judged according to parents against themselves alone
Universalistic values Values are applied to everyone. Schools help with this transition
Ideological State Apparatus A means to transmit the ruling class ideology Mass media, Education and the Church
False Class Consciousness Members of the working class see their position as normal, natural and inevitable. They fail to recognise the true nature of their situation
Ideological State Control Effective means of maintaining class rule. Controlling somebody's ideas
Correspondence principle How education corresponds to the workplace
Intrinsic Satisfaction Going into a job because doing the job is the reward ie a teacher
Extrinsic Satisfaction Going into a job for other reasons ie for the pay
Myth of Meritocracy Marxist ideas that meritocracy does not and can't exist in a capitalist system. There will always be an advantage for the ruling class
Counter- school culture Groups that have anti-school norms and values. Examples include; Lads and Ladettes
Hidden Curriculum Things that are not directly taught in lessons. Ideas and beliefs are transmitted through teachers
Patriarchy A social system in which men have all the power
Gender Socialisation The idea that girls and boys are socialised differently into different traditional gender roles
Reserve Army of Labour An extra labour force that is brought in during economic growth and thrown out in down turn
Compensatory Education Special measures that aim to create a level playing field for those who are disadvantaged
Marketisation of Education The school system is being bought and sold on the free market. There diversity in the types of schools to do so. eg chains and different types of schools (specialist schools, free schools and academies)
Parentocracy Parents have the choice over their children can be educated
Deschooling Getting rid of schools and formal systems/ institutions of education
