Questão Responda
Describe a method of measuring the levels of ATPase in different muscle fiber types. ATPase is pH sensitive. We put the fiber into either alkaline or acid conditions. Fast myosin is active in alkaline solution so the ATPase is active and therefore will take up the fluorescent dye we place in the solution. The darker the dye the greater the activity of ATPase and therefore we can determine fiber type.
Fat fibers are smaller/larger than slow twitch fibers Larger
In oxidative muscle fibers, what enzymes would we expect to find that indicate the muscle is aerobic? Succinate dehydrogenase, citrate synthase and increased mitochondria numbers.
What enzymes would we expect to find in glycolytic muscle fibers? Phosphorylase, pyruvate kinase
All motor units have the _____ motor units under their control. Same
How can we increase the force of our muscles over a very short period of time? i.e. isn't due to adaption Recruiting more motor units and therefore more fiber
how many fibers are there per motor unit? How many motor units do we have per muscle? 100-200 fibers 15-50 motor units
Muscle strength depends on ________ and not fiber type. Cross sectional area
What is the muscles speed of contraction based on? Rate of cross bridge cycling, which is dependent on ATPase activity, which is dependent on the myosin heavy chain isoforms.
