How do fossil fuels get to your home? | Fossil fuels are extracted from underground or under the sea bed, and then transported to refineries or power stations. The power stations transfer electricity to your home. |
How are most of your energy demands met? | Mostly, by burning fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas.) Nuclear power and biofuels are used, too. |
Why is so much fuel used to supply your energy? | Energy is used and distributed inefficiently, and there is always some wasted as heat or sound. |
How does a power station work? | In coal, oil, and most gas-fired power stations: → the burning fuel heats water in a boiler. → this produces steam → The steam turns a turbine which is connected to the electricity generator |
What is a biofuel? | A biofuel is a fuel taken from living or recently living organisms. For example: methane, ethanol, bio diesel, rapeseed, vegetable oil., nutshells, wood chip, straw, etc, etc. |
What are the advantages of biofuels? | → Renewable - used at the same rate as it is replaced → In theory, carbon neutral: because the carbon the living animal takes in from carbon dioxide can balance the amount made when the fuel is burnt. |
What is nuclear fuel? | Nuclear fuel takes energy from atoms. Energy is transferred from the nucleus of atoms. |
How does nuclear fuel work?? *Was not in test last time* | → The fuel is uranium/ plutonium, stored in sealed cans in the core of the reactor. →The nucleus is very unstable and can split into two → Energy is transferred from the nucleus when this happens. → because there is a lot of atoms in the core, it becomes very hot . |
How does nuclear energy work?? (continued) | → The energy of the core is transferred by a fluid called the coolant, which is very hot as it is pumped through the core. → it flows through a pipe to a heat exchanger and then back to the reactor core. The energy transferred is used to turn water into steam. |
Advantages of nuclear energy. | → Nuclear energy is not renewable however it is very efficient and won't run out any time soon → no greenhouse gases though there is radioactive waste. |
