What is the formula for speed? | Speed = Distance / time Time = Distance / speed Distance = Distance x time ( "/" means "divided by".) |
How to draw a distance time graph | 1) Write down how far an object went in an amount of time and if the object stopped/ carried on going 3) Draw straight, sloping line, which shows the distance travelled in an amount of time. If the object stopped, draw a horizontal line for how long it stopped. |
What does the gradient represent in a distance time graph? | The gradient represents the speed. To find the speed, find the gradient of the line. |
What does a a) horizontal line b) straight line sloping upwards mean? | Horizontal = stationary straight line sloping up = moving at steady speed |
VELOCITY AND ACCELERATION | p9.2 |
what is the difference between speed and velocity? | Speed is the amount of distance covered in a certain amount of time, and is a scalar quantity. Velocity shows the distance covered in a certain amount of time, too - but it shows the direction of the object as well so it is a vector quantity. |
What is acceleration? | The acceleration of an object is it's change in velocity per second, measured in "m/s squared" (meters per second, squared) |
*IMPORTANT* Formula for velocity | a = (v - u)/t a = acceleration v = final velocity u = initial velocity t = time taken |
Formula for initial and final velocity | v = u + at u = v - at a = acceleration v = final velocity u = initial velocity t = time |
What is deceleration? | The change of velocity per second when an object slows down , it uses the same formula as acceleration. |
Velocity time graphs | p9.3 |
What does the gradient on a velocity time graph represent? | The acceleration. Negative gradient = deceleration positive gradient = acceleration |
What does a: a) horizontal line b) straight, sloping line mean? | Horizontal = constant velocity straight, sloping = |
