Resumo de Recurso

Nós do fluxograma

  • Western Australia -nearest to Perth and Darwin. Australia is so far away from the rest of the world-detached in terms of setting, values, and life. World is changing but not Australia.
  • Wider Setting
  • Western Australia
  • Main Setting
  • Corrigan
  • A small, rural, racist, secretive town. Everyone is judgemental, racist, closed-minded, deceptive, small-minded. The things people do have to be kept secret to save themselves and others. Silvey wants us to think that the people are like this. Racist towards Jeffery and family (vietnamese) and also Jasper (half aboriginal) -easy to use them as a scapegoat as they are different. Jeffery family fled vietnam because of war and went to Australia thinking that it would be a safe place but when they get there they are blamed for everything bad.
  • Sub Settings
  • The Cricket Club
  • The Bookstore
  • The Glade
  • Jasper Jones hangs out there because it is preferable to being at home where he is not safe. He made it himself and it is his safe place.
  • Where Jeffery is discriminated against; hurt and abused. Charlie becomes close to Eliza. Where Jeffery also gets accepted-plays for the cricket team. When Eliza walks past and the boys take out their dicks and catcall. Not only racist, also sexist. They’re white, straight males believe they can do anything to anyone. Abuse to females. Part of the culture of Corrigan.
  • Where Eliza hangs out. Place of refuge for her. Safe.
  • Time Setting
  • 1965
  • Set in 1965 -right in the middle of the vietnam war. Before moon landing. There was a referendum on whether or not to include the indigenous in the population. Still a lot of prejudice about towards the indigenous -racism, indigenous, minorities. In history we have had women who, during the war, were working or training to professions. They were working ladies and loved it. But when the men came home they dropped all that and were expected to be a housewife and they were sad and mad. Along comes the 60’s and then women were breaking expectations and going to uni, getting jobs and doing what they liked. It was post war and so the young adults had no expectation to go to war when they turn 18 and so people could do what they liked. People had time on their hands and so they was a big social change. New music and past times. People were going out into the fields and shooting aboriginal people because racism and so people wanted to leave because Australia was so far behind in their thinking. And physically far away and so it took ages to get anything. The world is changing and no longer are women baking and being complicit they are leaving and are searching for their own futures. Freedom for women. Flower power. Invention and wide spread of contraception. World of change and destruction and everyone is so confused and men are like wtf. // Black civil rights.
