Obedience
Conformity
Means complying with the request or an order of an authority figure
Someone with more power or control can be control can be considered an authority figure. (e.g government)
Matching the behaviour and beliefs of others in order to fit in or because we don't know how to behave in a certain situation.
Types of Conformity
Compliance
Internalisation
Identification
Going along with the majority even though we privately don't agree
Going along with the majority because we don't know how to behave in a certain situation/ we adopt the beliefs of the group
Temporarily adopting the behaviours of a role model or group
Example: All your friends like listening to a certain band that you don't like, but you listen with the anyways
Example: People evacuating a burning building and you follow them because you don't know how to behave during a fire
Example: You wear the police officer uniform and act all responsible, but you get back home, you just relax and do whatever you want
Normative Social Influence
Informative Social Influences
Compliance because we need to fit in a group (compliance falls under this category)
Conformity because we don't know how to behave under a certain situation, so others provide the information and we adapt (internalisation falls under this category)
Deindividuation
Loss of personal self-awareness and responsibility as a result of being the group
