Freud's Psychosexual Stages of Development
  1. The Oral Stage:
    1. Erogenous zone: mouth
      1. Age Range: birth to 1yr
        1. What's happening? Weaning from bottle/breast, putting in objects in mouth
          1. “Fixation”: for over/under indulgence
            1. Over-indulgent: optimism, admiration of others, gullibility, dependent on other
              1. Under-indulgent: pessimism, envy, sarcasm, habitual oral stimulation (gum-chewing, smoking, talking, drinking)
            2. The Anal Stage
              1. Erogenous zone: anus
                1. Age range: 1-3 yrs
                  1. potty training; controlling bowels; power struggle w/ parents
                    1. making a mess or holding it in
                      1. Under-indulgent: anal expulsive (messy)
                        1. Over-indulgent: anal retentive (clean)
                      2. The Phallic Stage
                        1. Erogenous zone: genitallia
                          1. Age range: 4-6 yrs
                            1. the difference between boy’s and girls identity; “Mama’s Boy” “Daddy’s Girl”
                              1. Oedipus Complex- Castration Anxiety
                                1. jealously for the same-sex parent (losing penis)
                                2. Electra Complex- Penis Envy
                                  1. girls realize boys have an “extra” thing that they don’t have- they are jealous of the boy’s penis
                                  2. Suppressed memories & identification with same-sex parent
                                    1. Fixation: arrogance, recklessness and failed relationships in adulthood
                                    2. Freud states that everyone has three sides to our EGO
                                      1. ME: The one who interacts with the world
                                        1. Super Ego: morals
                                          1. Instincts: our primal urges (ID= Internal Desires)
                                          2. The Latency Stage
                                            1. Erogenous zone: none!!
                                              1. Age range: 6-12 (until puberty)
                                                1. focus on school, friends (same-ex relationships), hobbies, skills and interests
                                                  1. No sex drive ("suppressed libido")
                                                    1. No fixation!! NOTHING!!!
                                                    2. The Genital Stage
                                                      1. Erogenous Zone: genitals
                                                        1. Age range: 12 (puberty) -????
                                                          1. heterosexual relationships; intimacy
                                                            1. Libido's Back!!!
                                                              1. Sexual Experimentation
                                                              2. Establishment and maintenance of healthy relationships.
