The alkaline earth metals
  1. Loses two electron when they react
    1. 2+ ions
    2. atomic radius increases down the group
      1. Ionisation energy decreases down the group
        1. Increased shielding
          1. Valance electron is further away from the nucleus
        2. Reactivity increases down the group
          1. Low first and second ionisation energies
          2. Melting points decrease down the group
            1. Group 2 metallic structures, with the electrons of their outer shells being delocalised
              1. Bigger ions=smaller charge/volume ratio
                1. Electrons are more spread out
                  1. Except for magnesium
                    1. Crystal structure changes
                  2. Group 2 react with water
                    1. Be: doesn't react Mg: VERY slowly Ca: steadily Sr: fairly quickly Ba: rapidly
                    2. Solubility in hydroxide
                      1. Mg is least soluble
                        1. Barium is most soluble
                        2. Solubility in sulfate
                          1. Mg is most soluble
                            1. Barium is least soluble
                            2. Test for sulfate ions
                              1. Barium chloride is added to the solution
                                1. White precipitate of barium sulfate is formed
                              2. Group 2 compounds neutralise acidity
                                1. Calcium hydroxide neutralises acidic soils
                                  1. Magnesium hydroxide is used in indigestion tablets
                                    1. H+ +OH- --> H2O
                                    2. Barium sulfate in barium meals
                                      1. X-rays wont pass through barium sulfate
