Specific Heat Capacity
  1. Dependent on
    1. Mass of substance
      1. What substance is
        1. (or container of water)
        2. Amount of energy supplied
        3. Energy used for known change of temperature of known mass
          1. E = m x c x
            1. E = enery transfered in Joules (J); m = mass in kilograms (Kg); c = SHC (J/(Kg"C)); * = temeprature change in degrees Celcius ("C)
          2. Specific Heat Capacity (SHC)
            1. c = -------------
            2. Energy needed/transfered to raise the temperature of 1Kg of a substance 1*C.
              1. Unit of SHC = Joule per kilogram degree Celcius
                1. J/(Kg"C)
              2. Water has very high SHC - Sun's energy affects temperature of sea much less than affects land
                1. Coastal towns usually cooler in Summer and warmer in Winter than towns inland
                2. Storage heaters. Use electricity at night to heat special bricks or concrete blocks - energy transfer from bricks warms room
                  1. Bricks have high SHC - store lots of energy - warm up slowly when heater element on - cool down slowly when off
                    1. Electricity at night (off-peak) - heaters designed to be cost effective
                  2. SHC
                    1. water = 4200
                      1. oil = 2100
                        1. aluminium = 900
                          1. iron = 390
                            1. copper = 490
                              1. lead = 130
                                1. concrete = 950
