    1. Software which is commercially produced by an organisation for profit e.g. Windows and Microsoft Office
      1. It is professionally developed and carefully tested
        1. Support is provided to keep costumers happy
          1. Books, magazine articles and online tutorials give advice and instructions
            1. Updates and bug fixes meet the needs and suggestions of users
              1. User licences apply conditions on the way the software can be used and distributed
                1. The source code cannot be modified by users
                  1. Does not always meet individual needs as it is made for the majority
                    1. Support and updates can be expensive
                      1. The creator maintains exclusive control
                      2. Open-Source
                        1. Software whose source code is available for modification or enhancement by anyone e.g. Open Office and Android
                          1. Users can study the code to see how the software works
                            1. Users can change and upgrade the software
                              1. It is free to use
                                1. Users can modify the source code and adapt it to their needs
                                  1. Constant updates are available
                                    1. There is a community of enthusiasts to provide help and support
                                      1. It may not appear as professional as proprietary
                                        1. Interface may not be as user-friendly as proprietary
                                          1. Specialist knowledge may be required
