Be responsible
1. Readers must be aware of the text and the effects it has on them.
2. Figure out and acknowledge what the text says.
3. Be present in mind and heart when reading.
Examine your feelings awakened by the text.
1. The text won't matter unless it touches the reader emotionally or intellectually
2. Notice what's going on inside yourself and feel the emotion or raise the question the text evokes.
3. Pay close attention to what the text says and to what you feel and think as you read.

1. Draw conclusions that are supported by the text.
2. Don't be afraid to question the text.

1. Talk about the text with others to broaden and enrich insights.
2. Let the text awaken emotions and inspire thoughts.
3. Recognize the distinction between what you bring to the text and what the text brings to you.
