Definition of
cultural
Misperception:
not paying
attention to the
things that
aren’t
important to
me/us.
What’s our
perception of the
world: we
discriminate our
people more than
people from other
countries
Which are
our
perceptual
patterns:
stereotype
and judge
people
How our perceptual
patterns could become a
barrier: because of what
we say on the last
question we are allowed
ourselves to go with the
flow with the stereotypes
without even getting to
know them
Misinterpretation
Examples of how
categorize: By polarizing
physical condition, our
aparience,
social-economic level,
skin color, religion,
discapacities, sexual
orientation and country
Stereotypes: our own,
those that we make: "if he
wears glasses, he is a
nerd", "if he wears a suit,
he is an office worker", "if
she is wearing a short
skirt, she has a relaxed
moral"
Uses of stereotypes
Good: A job
interview,
going out with
your parents
in law.
Bad: running
when you see a
cholo, when a
girl cuts her hair
as a man and
everybody
assumes she is a
lesbian.
Self
awarness
Who we are culturally:
it´s like we were a 50/50
country because half of
the country very very
inclusive and the other
half is very prejudiced
Mexican Values:
nacionality, family
bonded, party
people, happy
Characteristics we
associate with
mexicans:
mustaches, tacos,
hats, nopales
How do we project
similarity: on time of crisis
it´s when we project
ourselves as a country, we
project that there is no you
or me, it´s just a big "we"
Misevaluation
What it´s
misevaluation:
judging something or
someone in a wrong way
How do we misevaluate:
when we make prejudices
when we don´t have the
whole information about a
topic.
Risks of misevaluation: getting into
a conflict with someone else, having
wrong information `cause you
don´t get involved correctly with
the other culture
How do we avoid
misevaluation: by informing
ourselves about the diversity
and traditions of the cultures
and ethnic groups among us
