Regency & minority allowed religious dissent + noble ambition to cause disorder in France
France's internal divisions made England secure from French invasion
1562 Elizabeth sent help to huguenots (french protestants) but men stranded when Treaty of Amboise signed March 1563
Pressure to support Huguenots grew largely after Massacre of St Bartholomew (August 1572). England tried to ignore due to excommunication.
Flirtation with Francis Duke of Anjou (HII's son) reached peak in 1578-79, marriage seemed possible but unpopular
Anjou's Death 1584 made protestant Henry of Navarre heir. Propelled Catholics in France into Alliance with Spain
1589 Elizabeth sent troops to Henry about 20,000 men were sent up to 1594
French religious wars concluded by Edict of Nantes (April 1598). Spanish forces withdrew after Treaty of Vervins (May 1598)
